Newton Recreation Center Annual Fall Festival Saturday, September 19 | 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM 1814 Newton Ransom Boulevard, just outside Clarks Summit The Newton Recreation Center invites the community to its annual Fall Festival on Saturday, September 19, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. This annual event is our way of giving back to the community for its continued support throughout the year. This year's festival is especially meaningful as we celebrate America's 250th Anniversary. Visitors are invited to explore the "250 Faces" exhibit and the Time Capsule, both on display in the History Room/Free Library. Discover the individuals nominated to represent Newton and Ransom Townships and take one final look at the Time Capsule and its contents before it is sealed during the festival to remain unopened until our nation's 300th Anniversary in 2076. There truly is something for everyone! Browse a wide variety of local vendors filling the indoor gymnasium, try your luck at the basket raffles sponsored by the Friends of the Recreation Center, and enjoy live music under the pavilion, generously sponsored by Fidelity Bank and the Friends of the Recreation Center. Families will love the FREE Kids Zone, featuring the friendly alpacas from Alpacas of Windy Haven Farm. Learn about these fascinating animals, discover how their fiber is transformed into warm clothing and blankets, and even have the opportunity to feed them. Children can also enjoy a bounce house, pumpkin painting, balloon twisting, and the ever-popular Touch-a-Truck exhibit. Bring your family, meet up with friends and neighbors, and join us for a fun-filled day celebrating our community. The festival will be held rain or shine.

SEPT. 12-13 & 19, sponsored by St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church in Old Forge held in the church hall, 320 Vine St., Old Forge. Three-day flea market hours: Saturday, Sept. 12, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13 (halfprice sale), 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 19 (bag & box sale), 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sale features antiques, household goods, furniture, children’s items, and gift card raffle includes a variety of ethnic foods, baked goods and refreshments for purchase.

A LITTLE BACKGROUND ON MATTHEW Matthew and his family are parishioners of Mary, Mother of God. Here’s a background for those that do not know Matthew or the Mursch Family, Matthew is 14 years old and will be a freshman at Holy Cross High School this fall. He was born with a congenital heart defect called HLHS. He has had 3 open heart surgeries from 5 days old to 2.5 years old. In 2020 he was diagnosed with an autoimmune blood disorder called ALPS and also CVID. He undergoes treatment at CHOP every month and will continue to do so for many years. This will require hospitalization and many trips to and from CHOP where he receives all his care. When ordering a ticket, please specify the type of sauce you would like. Queen of the Apostles in Avoca — Aug. 29. The Avoca parish at Saint Mary Church will host an “Irish Night” starting at 6 p.m. in Queen of the Apostles Hall, 742 Spring St., Avoca. The evening features an authentic Irish buffet dinner created by Chef Eugene Philbin, including classic Irish sausage, slow-cooked tender beef with a Guinness stout gravy, roasted garlic mashed potatoes with cabbage & Irish butter, seasonal vegetables roasted with local herbs, mixed green salad and Irish soda bread homemade desserts & soft drinks. Patrons may provide their own additional b e v e r a g e s . L i v e m u s i c a l entertainment by The Quietmen, featuring classic Irish & Celtic folk tunes, popular acoustic songs & all-time favorites. The annual Jimmy Connors Summer Concert Series at Nay Aug Park in Scranton will feature over two dozen groups playing rock, blues, brass, dixieland, polka, Irish, German and other styles of music. The series began May 3 with the U.S. Navy Band Cruisers performing hits from the 1960s through today. “Our Navy Band Concert was fantastic. They played nonstop for 90 minutes,” said Bob Gattens of the Scranton Municipal Recreation Authority that oversees Nay Aug Park, which hosts the free concert series.
